Who killed the man’s father, the leader of the resistance?
Pursuing the mystery of death, the son soon finds astonishing truth!

The miraculous masterpiece of Bernardo Bertolucci – the maestro of Italian cinema representing the 20th century – created at the age of 30!

It is the fourth feature work of the 20th century Italian film master Bertolucci, who fascinated film people all over the world by The Conformist (1970), Last Tango in Paris (1972) and The Last Emperor (1987), completed in 1970. Gaining an inspiration from “Theme of the Traitor and the Hero” of Fictions written by Jorge Luis Borges, an outstandingly talented Latin American novelist, Bertolucci boldly adapted its setting, changing the location from Ireland to a fanciful town in North Italy, and made a historic work that visualized the world of Borges which no one managed to attain upon the novel’s publication. Vittorio Straro debuted with his fine cinematography in this work and became Bertolucci’s indispensable partner, to later receive the Academy Award for Best Cinematography by Apocalypse Now (1979) of Francis Ford Coppola. The deep blue scenery captured at a moment right after sunset, sensual contrast of light and shadow, and the expression of time realized through smooth moving shots comprise the masterpiece of beautiful images dazzlingly presenting the world of the story.

Longing for the lost past and the chain of betrayals explode with rich colors on screen!

A man arrives at a small town in North Italy. His father, once an active resistance hero of this town, had been killed by the hands of fascists. The man came here to search for truth about death at the request of his father’s mistress for locating the criminal. As he visits those who were involved in the resistance at that time, they tell him stories about his father, here and there citing verses from Verdi’s opera Rigoletto and Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Before long, the man faces a surprising fact…

The last scene projects the scenery of the mind of the hero, who, captured by the labyrinth of memory, cannot return to the real world – here lies the essence of the art of film.
