Ninomiya Kinjiro
-Japan’s Legendary Icon of Diligence-

Almost all Japanese primary schools once had a statue of Ninomiya Kinjiro. The statues depict a boy carrying firewood while reading a book. Ninomiya’s diligence was an example for Japanese children and there was even a popular song of praise for the young peasant boy who struggled to become educated.

A deeper examination of his life reveals that Ninomiya was also a great democrat who dedicated his life to improving conditions for the common peasant folk.

He was born into a poor peasant family in 1787 during the Edo Era. When still a small child, his home was washed away by a flood. He lost his mother and father and was separated from his brothers. Despite these tremendous obstacles, Ninomiya studied and worked hard to eventually rebuild his family home, showing others how to overcome the problems common in that era.

Ninomiya’s reputation spread and finally, his feudal lord appointed him to overhaul the financing of poor, rural villages in his domain. At first, Ninomiya faced various problems dealing with the haughty samurai class, but his sheer dedication and diligence overcame their fears. During his lifetime Ninomiya rescued over 600 villages and hamlets from financial ruin.
